About Denpasar

Denpasar is the capital town of Bali Island (Bali Province). Denpasar also well known to almost anyone who visit Indonesia's famed and exotic tropical island. Denpasar is the principal entry and exit point for the island's substantial international tourist industry because of the close location with it's international airport.

Denpasar population at the moment is more than 387,500 (2000 census) and 491,000 (2002 census) make its become more dense per capita than Jakarta and the largest commercial center on the island. It is the only true city on the entire island, as all other urbanized areas are essentially heavily developed tourist districts or small towns.

Many first-time Bali visitors make the mistake of skipping Denpasar in their tour of the island. But in fact there is much to do and see in Denpasar. It is the major administrative and commercial center of the island like some industries including food processing, machinery, papermaking and printing, and handicrafts. Denpasar City is home to a university (1962), a Museum of Balinese Art, and the Konservatori Kerawitan, internationally famous as a Center for Balinese Dance. There are also a colorful cheap market and several department stores. Early mornings are recommended as the midday sun can be draining.
